54th International Art Exhibition: ILLUMInations – Biennale di VeneziaArt Exhibition
Saturday June 4th will open the 54th International Art Exhibition, with the title of ILLUMInazioni – ILLUMInations, directed by Bice Curiger and organized by La Biennale di Venezia under the presidency of Paolo Baratta. It will be accessible to the public until November 27th 2011 and it will be laid out in the Giardini and the Arsenale.
The exhibition ILLUMInazioni – ILLUMInations will form a single itinerary, featuring 82 artists from all over the world, including numerous young artists and women artists. As usual, the Exhibition will be paralleled by 89 National Participations, a record for the Art Biennale (they were 77 in 2009), housed in the historical Pavilions in the Giardini, in the Arsenale, as well as in other locations around the city.
Three most significant works by Venetian painter Jacopo Robusti also knows as Tintoretto (1518–1594) will be disclosed during the show. The masterpieces, which the board of Venetian Museums lent to the Venice Biennale, will be exhibited at the Central Pavilion in the Giardini. They are: the Last Supper, the Stealing of the Dead Body of St. Mark and the Creation of the Animals.
Four participating artists will create the “parapavilions”, architectural and sculptural structures erected in the Giardini and the Arsenale to house the works of other artists
The Padiglione Italia in the Arsenale, organized by the Ministry for the Cultural Heritage and Activities together with PaBAAC – General Direction for landscape, fine arts, architecture and contemporary art, will be curated by Vittorio Sgarbi.
Place of honor of the Padiglione is reserved to the 150th anniversary of the Italian Unity, with numerous and important special projects as for example the expositions promoted in the Italian regions and the activities programmed in the Italian Institutes of Culture promoted by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The project of the Padiglione is completed by the presence of twenty Art Schools of Italy that have chosen their most talented students.
At the exhibition there will be countries participating for the first time, as Andorra, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Haiti. Other countries will be participating after a long period of absence: India, Congo, Iraq, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Costa Rica, Cuba.
More than 40 Collateral Events will be arranged by international organizations and institutions, which will set up their exhibitions and initiatives in various locations around the city on the occasion of the Biennale.
